As part of the original creative team, Nick co-crafted the tone, style and look for the first season of Netflix’s BAFTA-winning Formula One: Drive to Survive, alongside showrunner Sophie Todd, which not only redefined the sports documentary genre but turned Formula 1 into a global sensation. Critics have lauded the series as “a masterclass in storytelling” that has “shifted the public perception” (The Guardian, NoFilmSchool) and brought a new diverse generation to the sport.
In addition, Nick helmed The Wall: Climb for Gold, an award-winning feature documentary that gives a stunningly intimate portrayal of the high-stakes world of competitive rock climbing. The film was hailed as a ‘gripping, emotional” portrait that “will be remembered as part of a turning point in climbing’s history” (The Sunday Times, Gripped). He is currently directing a provocative feature documentary with Oscar-winning Underdog Films (My Octopus Teacher), about the controversial biogenetics company Colossal.
His films are distinguished by their insightful, layered storytelling and his ability to draw out deeply human, often raw, moments in his interviews. And, as a cinematographer himself, Nick brings a highly visual approach to storytelling, adapting his cinematic style to drive and embody the narrative of his films.
In addition to his observational work, Nick’s versatile experience also includes multi-camera docu-drama and fixed rig projects, showcasing his ability to adapt to a range of styles and techniques. His ability to secure unprecedented and often sensitive access, with secretive institutions or contributors with high duty of care needs, such as the FBI, SWAT, death row inmates and mental health patients, is a testament to his expertise in navigating complex relationships with empathy and power.
Beyond his directorial work, Nick has also developed his own ambitious limited series concepts and feature documentaries, partnering with premium factual indies to pitch and produce. He is equally adept at sourcing innovative funding strategies, constantly exploring new ways to finance his projects and ensure they reach their fullest potential.
With a career that spans the leading platforms, networks and brands, from Netflix, Apple, BBC, Channel 4 to Adidas, amongst many others; Nick is a trusted and collaborative figure in documentary filmmaking.
