Forced labour investigation helmed by Stern & Wild client in the running for a 2025 Amnesty Media Award
Huge congratulations to Stern & Wild filmmaker Storm Theunissen whose brilliant documentary Blood on the Shelves: Secrets of the Xinjiang Tomato Industry has been shortlisted for Best Broadcast Investigation at this year’s Amnesty Media Awards.
Storm’s film is a BBC Eye Investigation for the World Service. It documents a year-long inquiry into how tomatoes made with forced labour in China are finding their way into supermarkets across Europe. All the supermarkets whose products were tested said they took the allegations seriously but disputed the BBC’s findings. However, the film’s claims led to an Urgent Question in the House of Commons and a call for stronger legislation to ban the importing of products linked to slave labour.
Storm is the film’s Producer and Director. Other Producers are Max Hudson and Bridget Wing with Mike Rudin as Exec Producer. Reporters are Runako Celina and Pulitzer Prize-winner Alison Killing.
The Amnesty Media Awards highlight excellence in human rights journalism. They span 10 categories with pieces selected from over 200 entries by a panel of experts from Amnesty International. This year’s winners will be announced at a ceremony at BFI Southbank on Wednesday 4 June.
